Is it disengenuous for an atheist to send out Christmas/holiday cards?

By

Obviously, if someone is an atheist, Christmas has no particular significance. It’s just another day. So, what do you think about an atheist sending out holiday cards?

Do you think it’s disingenuous for them to use this time of the year to send out greeting cards, considering this time of year is nothing special to them?

Thanks!

It isn’t just another day to most western civilizations. There is a whole other side to the Christmas holiday, the secularized side. I’m sure you’re familiar with it and I have a feeling you participate in it!

Not at all. If they are not sending out a religious card, they are just wishing the joy of the season — and there is a lot of joy in the season even for atheists. The spirit of giving and charity isn’t reserved for Christians you know! Also, remember, Christ wasn’t born on Dec. 25, the holiday was stolen from the pagan solstice to covert them to Christianity!

for many people today, Christmas isn’t about the religious beliefs, its about giving and being thankful for the holidays. it’s a time for sharing. anyone can give at Christmas time. i think it’s perfectly fine for an atheist to send out holiday cards. it shouldn’t matter what their religion is, they have every right to send out holiday cards and spread cheer. i wouldn’t expect them to pick a card that says something about Jesus, Bethlehem, or Christ, more like a card that simply says happy holidays, or peace, or maybe something with santa.

There are a lot of aspects of the season that have nothing to do with religion and it’s been primarily a secular holiday for years now. There’s no reason why an atheist shouldn’t celebrate it just as much as New Years or the 4th of July.

No its still a nice gesture and you CAN celebrate Xmas without the religious aspect. Just celebrating Santa’s arrival is usually enough for kids to be happy or just an excuse to spend time with family and friends. You don’t need religion for that.

My enjoyment of food, family, and presents exists independently of a bloodthirsty cult murdering thousands of pagans and plagiarizing their festival dates to celebrate the supposed virgin birth and resurrection of their fictional character..

Don’t remember JESUS opening yuletide gifts under a decorated tree….
